MLB 2008 Playoffs: Top Latino Athletes

Manny Ramirez, Evan Longoria and others aim to guide their teams to World Series glory.
By Jesús Triviño Alarcón

Most Likely To Win World Series MVP (& Make Boston Red Sox Fans Cry): Despite of his "Manny Being Manny" actions Manny Ramirez is a proven winner. Before the trade with the Boston Red Sox, the Los Angeles Dodgers were out of first place and confused; since the Dominican outfielder suited up they've been the hottest crew in the league with a 22-8 record. In the Dodgers sweep of the long-cursed Chicago Cubs, Manny hit .500 with two homers, three RBIs and scored five runs. If the boys in blue win the World Series Manny will have just as many championship rings as Kobe Bryant but the slugger will still have more cojones.

Big Papi Needs More Pop: After hitting a paltry .264 along with an un-Big Papi-esque 23 homeruns this season David Ortiz needs to pump up his bat for the Boston Red Sox to have a chance against the upstart Tampa Bay Rays. Even though Jason Bay (acquired via the Ramirez trade) has been a sparkplug, in order for the Sox to hoist another WS trophy someone needs to wake up the sleeping Papi.

Rookie of the Year: The 23-year-old Evan Longoria is proving this post-season that his Rays and his stats aren't flukes. In his first playoff game ever against the Chicago White Sox, the California native became the second player in history to hit two homers his first two at-bats. If the Rays have a shot against Big Papi's Bo Sox it lies heavily on his shoulders. PS: Don't ever call him Mrs. Longoria; that title is reserved for Tony Parker.

Most Likely to Run-over a Catcher: After missing 125 games due to injuries Rafael Furcal bolstered the Dodgers' line-up with four runs scored in the NLDS versus the Cubs. Look for the swift shortstop to make the Philadelphia Phillies nervous every time he's on base...which is often (he had a .467 on-base percentage during the NLDS). He's even drawing comparisons to (former) speed demon Johnny Damon. Let's just hope he doesn't leave the Dodgers after they win the WS and because a regular in the New York Yankees' disabled list.

Most Likely to Slay a Green Monster: Dominicans do it better, well, in baseball at least. Carlos Peña, along with Longoria, has been the muscle portion of the Rays' line-up this season. Initially, the first baseman started 2008 in dismal fashion with a .227 batting average but still managed to maintain his power numbers by belting out 31 homers by season's end. In the ALDS against the White Sox, Peña led his team with a .545 on-base percentage. Look for Peña to defeat Boston's Green Monster with his mighty bat.
