Daddy Knows Best

El Cangri suggests some fresh threads for any occasion.
By Jesús Triviño Alarcón

You can tell a lot about un hombre by the clothes he wears-everything from his swagger, what's in his iPod and how many dimes he can pick up at a club. It's all there just look closer. For example, reggaeton superstar, Daddy Yankee, is rarely seen without a NY Yankees cap. It's at times tilted to the side but always represents the most successful baseball franchise in history. Similarly, El Cangri, at least sales-wise, far exceeds his contemporaries and is an MTV darling. Taking a break from touring in support of this summer's El Cartel: The Big Boss, the follow-up to the multi-platinum Barrio Fino, DY lets us in on some of his fashion tips. Remember, to be a complete self-assured man the clothes are simply the beginning . . . platinum plaques are next.

Saturday Night Live: Don't know what to rock for your clubbin' nights? It depends if you're hanging with those in the higher income bracket or those who sweep up after them. "It depends on what kind of activity it is. If you're going to a club where you have to go dressed to kill you have to go the most stylish possible," says El Cangri. "If you go to a club with people from el barrio, you still have to be fresh but try to keep it more gully."

Super Sweet 15: If you're invited to a quinceñera when you're 16 it should be a blast. When you're 26 it could be torturous so you better be comfortable and fly. "When I've gone to the quinceñeras of my friends' daughters, I go with the best of the current fashion with some hood in there," he says. "It's a revolutionary combination so that I'll be presentable."

Rock Star: Ever wonder why Daddy Yankee wears a big chinchilla coat when he performs in NYC? 1) Because it's cold outside. 2) Because he's a stylish mofo. "When I perform I like to wear clothes that are current with the times," Yankee explains. I like taking risks with what I wear. I always like to be innovative with my fashion. [I have] liked dressing well since I was a child. My mom always did whatever to get me the best sneakers and clothes of the time. For a concert, the key is to leave them with something that they'll remember-from the performance or to the clothes I wore."
