ICU Art has been an advocate for legal graffiti outlets for over a decade. They have worked on numerous projects with the city, including keeping the Venice Beach murals legal.
According to ICU Art, recently Los Angeles shifted responsibility of approving legal murals from the Department of Cultural Affairs (arts experts) to the City of LA, Department of Building and Safety.
Even though ICU applied for a permit in July (painted the above mural in December), they were cited by the City for "unapproved mural/sign”. After the owner received this “Order to Comply” from the City along with the threat of a misdemeanor, a hefty fine and possible jail time.
ICU Art is asking for support at the next Department of Cultural Affairs (DCA), Cultural Affairs Commission (CAC) meeting this Thursday, March 6 at 1:30 PM. The meeting is at the DCA offices located at 201 N. Figueroa Street, Suite 1400 Los Angeles, CA 90012. Phone (213) 202-5500. www.culturela.org.

for years it was ill doing these big projects all over LA, being 15 ft. up a ladder while pigs look for reasons to fuck with us.
Vitory,
Thanks for bringing attention to this unjustice... Some politicians have no idea what these murals represent. Graf murals represent "our" artwork and tell stories of our struggles and "our" lives... It's not right that they try to strip us of that... For what??? So some gang bangers have more wall space to wage war on one another with gang signs???
