THE BEATLES, AMERICAN IDOL, AND THE EPL
Let me start this Blog by saying that the argument of what is the greatest band ever, really isn’t an argument. The correct and only answer is The Beatles. The band had great voices, spectacular lyrics and the best musical arrangements bar none. Now why am I, Pablo Alsina, a soccer play-by-play announcer, talking about the Beatles, well keep reading and it will all come full circle and make sense.
YESTERDAY
The Beatles’ song Yesterday, is one of the best ever. Coincidently enough, yesterday, I was watching American Idol, as they had the Final 12 singers, singing songs from John Lennon and Paul McCartney. Now I use the word “sing” very loosely because, seriously, none of the 12 can really sing worth a lick. Although my favorite song of the night was Brooke White playing the Piano and singing Let It Be. Not that she sang so well, or played flawless at all, but when she started to cry, well I must admit I was chocked up a bit. Just kidding, but seriously, it’s a crappy karaoke contest at best, but just like Brooke and Paul said, we just have to Let it be. I still think if Fox could, they would put American Idol on Eight Times a week. Well pop culture aside lets just agree to let it be, because honestly, it was painful to listen too.
A HARD DAYS NIGHT
As I sat there, and heard some of the greatest songs of all time, butchered by bad singers, I just had to think, how many times is John Lennon rolling over in his grave, if he knows just exactly what they have done with his lyrics. Meanwhile Paul McCartney is still counting the cash from Apple, who paid 400 Million dollars to put those songs on Itunes. Clearly I am way of topic, so let me make it all make sense and get back on the soccer track.
COME TOGETHER
The Beatles are from England, more precisely they are from Liverpool. And just like yesterday, when the Beatles where the focus of American Idol. Liverpool on Wednesday, was the focus in the Champions League. The English Club became the fourth team from England to clinch a spot into the quarterfinals of the tournament. With the Reds defeating Inter Milan, Liverpool joined Manchester United, Arsenal, and Chelsea in the final eight of the European tournament. Congrats to England. For the first time ever one nation has four teams advance to the quarterfinals of the Champions League, widely known as the top international club tournament in the world.
I AM THE WALRUS
So we can’t argue who is the best band of all time. And now we really can’t argue what is the Best Soccer League in the World. With four teams in the quarterfinals, The EPL clearly has flexed its muscles and quieted the rest. La Liga (Spain’s first division) only has one team remaining in the tournament. Barcelona. And to make matters worse, with Lionel Messi injured, the Spaniard club may be knocked out in the next round. However, I picked them to win it all in an earlier post, so I will stay strong. Although I also picked, Manchester United. Meanwhile the Calcio, (Italy’s first division), only has Roma left in the tournament. Both teams from Milan where knocked out. Inter and A.C. Milan waved goodbye in the round of 16. The Bundesliga (German First division) has only one team left. Shalke 04 holding down the fort for German clubs, but they will likely be bounced in the quarterfinals. The remaining club is Fenerbache of Turkey, which has had a great Champions League, but I will bet you Ryan Seacrest’s fake teeth that they will not advance any further.
IMAGINE
So picture this, if the drawing for the champions league works out perfectly for English clubs, and every single team from the EPL plays someone not from England, then it is possible that the last four standing in the Champions League, would be, Manchester United, Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea. At that point, England would be guaranteed of having the champion and the runner up of the tournament, and also how about third and fourth place. Plus they would put a definite end to the argument of which league has the best teams in the World.
OB-LA-DI, OB-LA-DA
As far as American Idol goes, I admit I am a fan. By a fan I mean, if they are singing Beatles songs, then I will watch because I love the Beatles. To be fair, I have not seen any other episode of this season. I have only watched The Beatles tribute. So I apologize if I was harsh on the singers, just not easy to sing Beatles song. With that said, below I left a youtube link of Brooke White singing Let it Be. And like always, if Scarlett Johansson just happens to be reading this, well I Want to Hold Your Hand. My fellow blog readers will understand that last sentence.
