Have You Met...

The Oscars and Football (Soccer) plus Scarlett Johansson

Feb. 2008

I thought on my blog today I would mix the two things I love the most. Football (soccer) and Movies.  So with the 80th edition of the Academy Awards (The Oscars) having just taken place, I thought why not give some of the awards to the most deserving people from the World of Football (soccer). Of course since this is all for entertainment, I will pick people that are similar to the actual winners from the Oscar's ceremony.

Before I start let me get off on a quick rant about these past Oscars, which will likely go down as one of the least watched in history. Regardless I enjoyed them. Then again, I am a film buff. But I do have a few opinions to add. John Stewart did a fine job. He is awesome on The Daily Show, but played it a bit to safe during the Oscars. Yet I still give him a 6. Thought he did an even better job the first time he hosted. Love you John, but you are no Billy Crystal. It's not easy to return and get better. Let me move on to some of the winners. No Country For Old Men won for Best Film.  Now, I'm not saying that I didn't enjoy the movie, I did, but no way should that film be called the Best film of the year. But, looking at the other choices, I probably would have picked it as well.  Ok, now that I got that off my chest let's switch gears and mix in some football (soccer) into this blog. As I announce my selections for the PABLO's. (My yearly post-Oscars Football related awards.)

BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR

The best supporting actor award went to Javier Bardem for his role in No Country For Old Men.  As Anton Chigurh, Javier Bardem portrays a sociopathic killer on the trail of a man who has stolen a bag of drug money.  Bardem wore a ridiculous looking wig, yet played the role perfectly.

My choice for "Best Supporting Actor" this season goes to Frank Ribery.  Like Bardem in "No country", Ribery also has a scary looking haircut. You can even add that he has a killer look to him. And actually, the Bayern Munich midfielder has been killing the opposition.  He also gets the award, because his play has helped LUCA TONI shine in the Bundesliga. The Italian is leading the league in scoring, but its Frank Ribery that takes home the PABLO as Best Supporting Actor.

BEST SCRIPT

The Academy award for Best script went to Diablo Cody for JUNO. The one time stripper, wept and thanked plenty of people for being chosen the winner. The film was about a high school girl that gets pregnant and decides to give the child away. But at one point in the film, you actually think she will keep it. Strangely I can't tell if it was a happy ending or not. Depends who you ask.

Well in the sports world my choice goes to a script, which like in Juno, for some people is a comedy and for others it's the saddest story ever. The Best Script goes to the England National Team for the terribly disappointing, yet somewhat comedic, but tragic drama called "England Out of Euro 2008".   Incase you didn't see the "film", the script was fantastic. The team was out of it, and needed a minor miracle. England needed Israel to beat Russia to have a chance in the last game. And Israel did it. The Russians were beaten, England was in, if they could just beat Croatia at home. Everyone watching the film was certain they would do it. Like with Juno, and people thinking she would keep the baby, viewers of this "film" were certain that England had clinched a spot in the European tournament. Then, the best plot twist since Bruce Willis being dead, in the Sixth Sense. Croatia scores a late goal, and England is eliminated! However, what a great consolation prize, Beckham and the boys took home the PABLO for Best Script.

BEST DIRECTOR

The Academy Award for best director(s) went to the Coen Brothers. Ethan and Joel Coen. The Coen brothers won the award for No Country of Old Men.  They took a book, they re-worked it and put in the right parts to win the top prize.

My choice for "Best Director" this season, has to go to Tottenham Hotspurs' manager Juande Ramos. The Spaniard was lured to the English league and the club for millions and millions of dollars. The expectations were huge when he took over. Yet Ramos, brought in the right parts, and what do you know, he leads Tottenham to their first major title in nine years. Juande and the Hotspurs beat Chelsea to claim this year's Carling Cup. And more importantly Ramos won the PABLO for best director.

BEST SEQUEL

The Oscars don't actually give an award for best sequel, but with the lack of fresh ideas, every year there are dozens of part two's and part three's, and in some cases four, five and six. So I really feel this should be a legit category.  Without a doubt RAMBO would have won it this year. Not because the film was any good, but because Stallone is still a bad ass.  Then again, did you see his face. He has taken so much HGH that RAMBO's face should have won for Best Special affects Make-up.

Anyway, moving back to the beautiful game, in 2008 Egypt repeated as Champions of the African Cup.  The Pharaohs won it all in 2006 and defended their title this year in Ghana. The title was Egypt's 6th, which is the most by any nation.  Hopefully they will be able to use it as a springboard to reach South Africa 2010, because although they have  many African titles, Egypt has only qualified for a World Cup, once, since 1934. Regardless, congratulations to the Egyptian National team for repeating as African Cup Champions, and also for winning the PABLO for BEST SEQUEL.

BEST ACTOR

The Oscar for Best actor went to Daniel Day-Lewis.  The two-time Oscar award winner won for his role as Daniel Plainview, a ruthless California oilman who will stop at nothing to achieve wealth and power.

Now in the soccer world, I chose someone that resembles the Actor and not the role. Ricardo Izecson dos Santos Leite is one of the nicest players in the world. Actualy he is such a good person, that he also plans to become a Pastor when his playing career comes to an end. And like Daniel Day-Lewis, who won the top award in his profession twice, my choice will more than likely win the top award in his profession at least two times.  He won FIFA player of the year for the first time in 2007, and will likely be a candidate again in 2008. Along with his FIFA player of the year award, the PABLO for Best Actor in a Leading Role goes to Kaka.

There were plenty of other awards given out but didn't have that much time in this blog, so let me just throw in one more.  Lionel Messi won the PABLO for Best Visual Effects,  for his goal against Getafe when he dribbled by five players to score the goal of the year.

Hope you have all enjoyed the first year of the PABLO's . There will be plenty more next year.  Hopefully for our ceremony next time around I'll be able to walk the red carpet with Scarlett Johansson on my arm. By the way, if you know Scarlett or know someone that knows someone, that is neighbors with someone, that knows Scarlett, please give her my email, and tell her I wrote this perfect script for her to act in. It's a romantic comedy called Claustrophobia that takes place in 1950's New York and involves a deranged Elevator attendant that decides to trap her inside his elevator to ask her out on a date.  Catchy isn't it? Well if you are a producer email me also. And if you like films, check out my film webpage http://www.3hmfilms.com But back to Scarlett for a second. The romantic in me still thinks I can make her love me if I could just spend one afternoon with her. It might happen, however the first second she tells me "who the hell is that new bitch on your myspace?" well then I will just have to tell Scarlett to step. Plus our Hollywood name doesn't even sound that good to begin with.... ScarBlo or PaScar No thanks.  But then again, to stare at a face like hers, I can deal with being called either by the media. Thanks to all of you for reading, looking forward to getting your replies, and your nominees for next year's PABLOS.
