Sunday night’s GRITA|SAY SOMETHING show at New York City’s SOBs set off the seven-day countdown to the Black August Hip-Hop Project’s 10th Anniversary- and last show. The Hip-hop generation's celebration of Black nationalism and resistance for 10 years, the Black August Hip-hop Project uses the language of Hip-hop to raise awareness about political prisoners and New Afrikan leaders in the US. Set during “Black August”- a month historically marked by the resistance of African descendants in the Americas- Black August celebrates ten years of Hip-hop and social struggle with the slogan “Free your Hood”. The grand finale of the ten-year old cipher for underground MCs and trendy children of rage features Mos Def, Talib Kweli, dead prez, and DJ Evil Dee among others. Considered a meeting place for the socially conscious and left-inclined, Black August couldn’t rock New York City right without local protest pack, Rebel Diaz.
Their performance at GRITA|SAY SOMETHING had the crowd pumping their fists in the air, and singing along as if in fact, they were singing for their freedom. Originally from Chicago, Rebel Diaz members G1 and Rodstarz hail from Chile via Engalnd- they are the sons of Chilean exiles who fled the Pinochet regime- while Afro-Rican spitfire/songstress, Lah Tere’s homegrown roots reflect the best of Boriken and Humboldt Park. For over a year, they have been living, loving, and raising hell in NYC, where you’ll typically see them anywhere from your neighborhood park to your local immigration protest. Rebel Diaz opens Black August on Sunday, August 26th, at the Nokia Theater (NYC).
