Have You Met...

Mi Hermana, The Actress/Director

So my 18-year-old sister Carly’s the bomb and decided to stage a revolution at her high school by directing her own play and recruiting students who wouldn’t normally try out for stuff like this – those on probation, struggling to graduate, and who already have a D.U.I. (no joke) – after her notoriously crazy drama teacher discouraged her from being in her senior play. She chose to direct Grease and in matter of a month and some days, put on the best show I’ve ever seen.

Carly, who’s well on her way to being the Latina Reese Witherspoon (and I’m not just saying that ‘cause she’s my sister), played her usual vixen character (Betty Rizzo) to a T and had a diverse cast that included Mathieu Aquino (Danny Zuko), Ellie Fraser (Sandy Dumbrowski), Dorian Danic (Roger), Ian M. Jones (Vince Fontaine), Ellie Kovara (Patty Simcox), Cash O’Mara (Kenickie), Katie Backus (Frenchy), the nice Mormon girl who’s never acted before who totally became her character, and Vince Uribe (Eugene Florczyk) who’s creative genius came into play in all aspects of the show.

Although at times the content was a little risqué for my dad to handle – smoking fake cigarettes, downing bottles of wine during girl talk about accidentally getting pregnant, and Sandy's badgirl makeover that included a strip down to shiny, black American Aparrel Lame leggings – they surprised everyone by pulling off this classic musical with a quickness.

Grease was given a 2008 makeover with dance moves like Souljah Boy’s “Crank That” replacing the Mashed Potato and the occasional urban slang thrown in. The South Pasadena High School auditorium was packed with kids, parents and family members who watch as their loved ones made them so proud. My sister, included.
