I ain't a hater, so I'm not gunna lie. I really enjoyed Sex and the City. Me and the girls didn't make a huge affair out of it though. We went on a Tuesday night after we all got off work and polished off popcorn, soda and M&M's during previews instead of happy hour cosmos.
And no, it wasn't me and all my girlfriends. I'm Latina. It was me, my Mom, my sister who was probably too young to see it (17), my aunt, my cousin, my sister-in-law and my best friend Boogie*, who's in the midst of planning her own wedding/freaking out because she didn't realize how hard it was to get married in the Catholic church, especially when her finace's getting his first annuled. *Name changed so she won't kick my ass.
Although the whole premise of the series is based on materialism with occasional conscious-driven moments, it was a nice escape from reality and the monotony of the daily grind. Although I'm not the kind of girl who fantasizes about owning a pair of Manolos—I'm of the Target, Ross and Payless class—it's nice to see how the other side live.

I mean, Carrie's closet that her very rich and generous boyfriend built for her was the size of the house I grew up in. And those lack of sex-induced shopping spree scenes made me wanna barf with the thought of kids dying in Iraq daily in the back of my mind. But come on, it's a movie; and racked up zillions at the box office.
Plus, as I get older I try not to take everything as seriously as I did when I was in college in order to combat depression and avoid a fight with my very superficial shopaholic cousin.
So I sat in that theatre laughing, crying, fuming, and trying my best to ignore the following:
1. The fact that everytime Samantha came into town from LA, where she relocated with her Hollywood actor boyfriend, the girls went into an overacted frenzy and were always so surprised to see her, even though she was in town like the whole movie. They should've just left her in the damn city.
2. The gentrification of NY references that were treated obnoxiously i.e. Miranda looking for a new apartment in the next "up-and-coming" (soon-to-be-gentrified) neighborhood of Chinatown (Old Ukraine) with her nanny and son in tow and saying something like "Oh, there's a white guy with a baby. Let's follow him!" Racist much?
3. When the girls end up going with Carrie on her honeymoon to Mexico and Charlotte won't eat or drink anything native because "It's Mexico!"
4. The fact that there was not one Latino in the whole movie. I mean, come on, it's NY! The Latinos in the Mexico scenes don't count either. They had no choice but to include them.
What I did take away from the movie was just how crucial it is to cast people of color (Jennifer Hudson was the &%$#!), the importance of forgiving our loved ones even when they betray us completely, and—I know this sounds cheesy—how love is all that really matters.
