Have You Met...

WHy Vote????????????????????

The Florida recount, which ultimately decided the presidential race between Al Gore and George Bush, left a horrible taste in my mouth regarding the system in which we use to elect our most important official in the United States. As a voter, I felt compelled to never vote again.

4 years later I voted, and I honestly believed there was no way George Bush would get re-elected given the track record of his first term. Our country was already black and blue from the 911 attacks, the war, the increase in gas prices etc. etc. etc.—all under George Bush’s presidency. Somehow he got re-elected. With a disapproval rating out the roof; he got re-elected. Again, I felt the system failed us. I thought, how can someone so bad be elected again…..for another 4 years? I told myself I’ll never vote again.

3 ½ years later I again found myself voting on Super Tuesday. I voted for Barack Obama. In my opinion, and many other’s opinions, he is a breath of fresh air contrary to recent leaders in the past decades. His ability to get people out to vote has been unmatched. Although he did not win California, he has went on to win 35 primaries and caucuses to Hillary’s 23, 21 states to her 11 states. People young, old, black, Asian, white, and even Latino (which was evident in Virginia, DC, and Maryland) have gotten on the Change Bandwagon.

Obama currently leads in pledged delegates, 1253 to Senator Clinton’s 1211. Pledged delegates are the delegates awarded by people like you and me who vote. You need 2025 delegates to win the democratic nomination.

What worries me are the Super-delegates. Super-delegates are delegates that can be awarded to candidates by over 800 current and former elected officials, party leaders, governors, judges etc. Most of the people are somehow affiliated with the Democratic Party or the White House.

With the race as close as it is, Super-delegates may end up deciding who wins the Democratic candidacy. Once again, despite the record number of people voting, it will come down to those who work in and around the White House who will ultimately decide who our next President will be.

So WHy Vote??????
